County Reduces Solid Waste Utility Fee

During the Council meeting on August 25, 2016, County Council put in place a 50 % subsidy program for 2016 Solid Waste Utility costs. County residents will see their September bill go from $215.00 to $107.50 for the 2016 year of service. Following the receipt of comments from many residents, Council felt that a subsidy was reasonable in the first year of the Solid Waste Utility program to help residents of Lac Ste. Anne County adjust to the full cost of this service.

The Solid Waste Utility created in the spring of this year, ended the inequity of having Solid Waste Utility charges collected through taxation. As an example, in 2015 Solid Waste cost collected with taxation amounted to approximately 6% of municipal taxation. This meant that two home owners with differing property assessments ($100,000 and $400,000) would pay different amounts (in this example the first home would pay only a quarter of the amount paid by the second). Additionally, properties that couldn’t access the system, like commercial and linear properties, paid 6% of their taxes to a service they couldn’t access.

When speaking to the issue, Councillors clarified that they remain committed to the utility model for Solid Waste services in the County, but wanted to provide some assistance to residents as they move toward paying the full cost of service. County Council asked that the subsidy program be reviewed in upcoming budget discussions this fall.
