Helping Sustain Agriculture, Wildlife and Open Spaces

Lac Ste. Anne Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) is a leader in the ALUS Community. Of the five thousand acres enrolled across Canada in 2018, 500 were in Lac Ste. Anne County alone; proof positive that the farmers in this region are devout stewards of the land and caretakes of the soil. To date, ALUS Lac Ste. Anne has helped fund multiple watering systems; fences around dugouts and waterbodies; shelterbelt planting; and beaver-friendly management devices. Any producer interested in protecting natural features on their landscape while supporting their farm operation is encouraged to get involved.

Lac Ste. Anne County is looking for agricultural producers to participate in our Alternative Land Use Services Program which helps sustain agriculture, wildlife, and natural spaces for the benefit of both landowners and the environment. The ALUS program is voluntary and available to residents who are actively using their land for agricultural production. It is not available for acreage owners who aren’t actively producing off their landscape.

We are looking for agricultural producers whose farms will benefit from one or more of the following project types:

  • Riparian area enhancements and expansions
  • Wetland restoration, creation & enhancement
  • fencing around water bodies
  • Multi-row shelterbelts/reforestation
  • Watering systems
  • Nesting structures
  • Native prairie establishment
  • Pollinator habitat

Our priority is taking marginal, unproductive, inefficient, or environmentally sensitive lands out of agricultural production and putting them into the production of environmental goods and services. Some examples of land suitable for ALUS projects include:

  • Riparian areas along watercourses
  • Steeply sloped crop land
  • Low wet field areas and wetlands
  • Highly erodible fields
  • Small fields that are not able to efficiently handle farming equipment

Why Participate in ALUS?

ALUS is a voluntary program dedicated to helping you establish your environmental visions for your property. ALUS provides a monetary incentive to eligible landowners for establishing these stewardship projects on their property.

The ALUS annual payments are based on acres taken out of production and are a recognition that implementing stewardship activities costs landowners money. Because the benefits provided, such as clearer water and air, benefit society as a whole we believe landowners should be compensated for some of the costs.

ALUS helps producers in three ways:

  1. By working with producers to identify stewardship opportunities on their farms, and helping them throughout the ALUS process.
  2. By sharing establishment costs (for materials and labour) with the land owner or manager.
  3. By providing an annual payment, based on competitive local land rental rates, for land that is taken out of production.

Success in the Lake Isle Watershed – Alternative Land Use Services Program

In March of 2015 the Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) program began its debut for Lac Ste. Anne County in the Lake Isle - Sturgeon River Headwaters Sub-watersheds. Since its inception in the sub- watersheds, ALUS Lac Ste. Anne and Parkland County established 10 projects on 7 unique farms positively impacting 160 acres of farmland. Projects included fencing off waterways from livestock, protecting riparian areas, and planting native vegetation on degraded land. The goal of these projects is to improve water quality, enhance wildlife habitat, prevent soil erosion and loss, and increase biodiversity. This program aims to reduce the impacts of flood and drought events on the landscape. ALUS works by implementing Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) and is designed to compliment the current agricultural operations. ALUS works with the farmer to design projects and provide technical and financial support to see the project right through to the end. The Agricultural Watershed Enhancement Program (AWEP) under Growing Forward 2 provided a grant to get ALUS up and running with tremendous help from Parkland County. A second grant through the Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program was secured in 2017 to grow ALUS in Lac Ste. Anne County. Hiring an Arborist

Why Hire an Arborist?

Well cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. For many types of trees pruning is an important part of routine maintenance. With some training, homeowners can carry out the necessary pruning of many trees and shrubs. However, tree removal and pruning of large trees can be hazardous and is best done by a professional.

Contracting an Arborist for tree pruning and tree removal: Once a tree becomes too large to safely maintain yourself, the work should be carried out by an arborist.

Arborists specialize in the care of individual trees. They are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.

Services Arborists Provide

Pruning: An arborist can determine the type of pruning necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of trees. Pruning techniques include removing limbs that:

  • Interfere with utilities or structures
  • Obstruct streets or sidewalks
  • Are dead, weak, or decayed and pose unacceptable risk
  • Are diseased or insect-infested
  • Have been damaged by storms
  • Will increase light penetration and reduce wind resistance within the canopy upon removal (thinning)

Other pruning techniques are used to maintain proper structure in young trees, improve tree shape or form, and reduce the likelihood of future damage during storm events.


Tree Removal: Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. An arborist can help decide whether a tree should be removed. Removal is recommended when the tree is:

  • Dead or dying
  • Considered an unacceptable risk
  • Causing an obstruction that is impossible to correct through pruning
  • Crowding and causing harm to other, more desirable trees to be replaced by a more suitable specimen
  • Located in an area where new construction requires removal

Emergency Tree Care: Storms may cause limbs or entire trees to fall, often landing on other trees, structures, or cars. The weight of storm-damaged trees is great, and they can be dangerous to remove or trim. An arborist can assist in performing the job in a safe manner, while reducing further risk of damage to property.


Planting: Some arborists plant trees, and most can recommend species that are appropriate for a particular location. The wrong tree in the wrong location will lead to future problems as a result of limited growing space, insects, diseases, or poor growth.


Other Services: Many arborists also provide a variety of other tree care services, including:

  • Plant Health Care or preventive maintenance to keep trees in good health while reducing any insect, disease, or site problems
  • Fertilization and soil modification for improved tree health
  • Cabling or bracing for added support to branches with weak attachments
  • Soil aeration to improve root growth
  • Installation of lightning protection systems
  • Applications to manage certain insect and disease problems
  • Consulting and legal expert services relating to trees

Annual Clubroot Survey Results

September 25 marked the completion of the County’s annual clubroot inspection, where regional fields are checked for visible symptoms of clubroot on canola plants.

Thank you to all producers who participated in the annual inspections! Lac Ste. Anne County is endlessly impressed with our producers’ ability to prevent the spread of this soil-borne crop disease. At this point, anyone with a confirmed field should have received the news already; either contacted by the County or by the landowner of the property.

What to Expect as a LSACFS Volunteer Firefighter

Being a Paid-on-Call Firefighter means that as a member of the LSACFS team, you receive monetary compensation for the hours you are part of an emergency response, as well as for other assigned duties by the Fire Station Officers. As a LSACFS Firefighter, the County will provide you with all the training necessary to meet requirements as per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards that Lac Ste. Anne County adheres to.

Along with all the training – AT NO COST TO YOU – you will be provided with all the personal protective equipment needed to protect you while on any emergency scene – AT NO COST TO YOU. Join a dynamic and inspiring team of like-minded individuals who have the desire to help when help is needed, anytime, anywhere.

Our ASK of you, as a potential recruit, is BIG and we cannot hide this fact. From you we need commitment to being away from your family and private life for training, meetings, emergency responses every week. We ask that you live in the response area for the Fire Station you are part of. We ask that you confirm with your physician that the physical requirements of being a Firefighter are something that you are able to do. And, last but by no means least, we ask that you show pride in yourself for the selfless commitment you have in wanting to help – your community, your family, your friends and your neighbours, as well as the strangers you haven’t yet met.

In 2016, LSACFS Fire Stations have the potential to attend to well over 500 emergency calls as the call volume sits at over 350 calls as of August. These calls will range from motor vehicle collisions, medical assistance (as part of Alberta Health Services Medical First Response Program), structure fires, wildland/grass/brush fires, vehicle fires, alarm calls, and aid to the County’s area partner municipalities as well as to many other requests.

Please be advised that the Sangudo Campground Outdoor Movie Night featuring a screening of the film Before the Plate scheduled for Friday August 23 has been postponed due to weather concerns and low ticket sales.

Agricultural Services and the Sangudo Ag Society will look at an alternate venue to show County residents this insightful and entertaining film about the people who grow and raise the food we eat. Stay tuned for updates.
