Economic Development Roadmap

A Success Story in the Making

Economic Development (or Ec Dev for short) is an essential function of any municipality. Simply put, the role of Ec Dev is to enhance the well-being of communities by developing strategies and implementing programs that support local business. Ec Dev is not a new concept; it’s a mandate that all levels of government pursue with varying degrees of success. What is new, however, is the collaborative route Lac Ste. Anne County and the Town of Onoway have taken via its aptly-named Partners in Progress initiative.

Following years in the research and planning stages, some of the practical applications of this regional think tank have launched. Available on the Partners in Progress website, these new resources are tailor-made for the Lac Ste. Anne region, and are free for use by any local businesses looking to grow. Most exciting of all, these are just the first offerings in a suite of resources being developed by the Steering Committee. Regional businesses are encouraged to take advantage of these resources, and to return often to see what’s new as the Partners in Progress program gains momentum in the weeks and months to come.

    Business Licenses

County Passes New Business License Bylaw

Effective January 2015, Lac Ste. Anne Council adopted a Business License Bylaw. The old system of issuing Business/Development permits created a difficult situation from a planning perspective. The business license was tied to the land rather than the business, potentially limiting the protection of County infrastructure and property rights of others.

Additionally, the new business license bylaw allows the County to collect information on businesses to allow economic development efforts to be focused on the strengths of business already operating successfully in the region.

Why the need for a Business License Bylaw?

    1. Businesses with an old business license/development permit will receive a complimentary 2015 business license.
    2. Licensed businesses will benefit from the economic development efforts of Lac Ste. Anne County.
    3. The business license fee is $50 annually and used exclusively to administer the program and fund economic development.
    4. Many business types are exempted from the business license bylaw including farming, market vendors, most non-profit organizations (e.g. Avon, Pantry Chef, Scentsy), and many others. The full list of exemptions is included in the bylaw
